San Marino, a decidedly feminine fragrance

The fragrance "San Marino" by Laykin et Cie is a remarkable olfactory representation that draws inspiration from two significant cultural landmarks: the Huntington Library Rose Garden and the renowned portrait "Pinkie" by Thomas Lawrence. This fragrance encapsulates the sophisticated charm of San Marino, a city that harmoniously blends historical elegance with contemporary traditions.

The Huntington Library Rose Garden is celebrated for its extensive collection of roses, featuring over 1,200 varieties. This botanical garden not only serves as a visual feast but also provides a rich olfactory experience, with the scent of blooming roses permeating the air. The careful curation of these floral varieties contributes to the overall sensory experience that "San Marino" aims to evoke.

In addition to its botanical influences, "San Marino" is also inspired by the artistic heritage represented by the portrait "Pinkie," painted by Thomas Lawrence in 1794. This artwork, alongside Gainsborough's "Blue Boy," is housed in the Huntington Library and has always been a favorite of 6th generation California jeweler, Erik Laykin who was inspired to produce San Marino Perfume in 2021. The interplay of art and nature in this fragrance reflects the historical significance and cultural richness of San Marino.

The fragrance itself is designed to embody the sophistication and charm of this quiet corner of Southern California, abutting Pasadena to it's north and Los Angeles to it's southwest. Remarkably, the city has retained its old world character while embracing modernity.

With her light pink hue and delicate expressions of rose mixed with Ylang-Ylang, white flowers and dry woods for the dominant middle section of the fragrance, she is also accented by top notes of bergamot, tarragon and red fruits while remaining cradled by a foundation by white must, vanilla and amber.

A truly feminine fragrance which is rich in complexity but clear and unambiguous in it's sensibilities.

Rosa 'Huntington's 100th'

A special variety of rose, 'Huntington's 100th', provided a quintessential touch to The Huntington's Centennial in 2019. The pastel yellow and orchid-pink floribunda was hybridized by Tom Carruth, The Huntington's E. L. and Ruth B. Shannon Curator of the Rose Collections, and is on display in the historic Rose Garden, as well as in a dedicated garden just north of the Virginia Steele Scott Galleries of American Art. The hybrid's abundant blooms emit an intense fragrance of lemon blossom with a hint of baby powder. It is sometimes available from the Huntington Plant Sale, and also at local nurseries, sometimes under the synonym, Life of the Party™; they are the same rose.
